True Kindness

An art teacher points to something on an easel where a student is painting

Thinking about World Kindness Day got me thinking about a recent conversation I had. I’d mentioned that one place ageism lives is in the question, “When are you going to retire?”

My companion confessed, that’s exactly what she’s been asking her art-teacher mom. She’d been thinking, Wouldn’t it be nice to stop working, quit the commute, and just relax?

She’d also been thinking the question came from a place of kindness. But then she realized, if mom wanted to retire, she’d retire.

The kinder thing to say would be, You clearly love your job. I bet they love you, too.
