Wanted: Clarity
Lately I’ve been working on my help-me-hear-you karma. When someone says, “What’d you say?” and comes closer, I practice looking at them directly, speaking a little louder, and (without overdoing it) articulating a bit more distinctly.
Having some hearing loss myself, I know that volume isn’t always the problem; it’s often clarity. And when that’s the case, hearing the same muffled sounds (“Uh-huh”) at higher decibels doesn’t help.
Hearing aids are in my future, but I’m holding out, yearning for technology that makes the words more audible, not simply louder.
In the meantime, I’ll keep aiming—and hoping—for clarity.
