Yes to YODA

Various-sized wooden figures representing people

In early January, Ashton Applewhite published an article in Next Avenue kicking off a big new idea: YODA, or Youngers and Olders Dismantling Ageism.

Her pitch: Let’s de-normalize age segregation and get everyone in the same room. Let’s quit believing the fake argument of young vs. old. Let’s identify and challenge the places we see these structures, along with the underlying assumptions.

What’ll we talk about? Ashton recommends important questions (and honest answers) about age, advantage, bias, and who benefits from the existing hierarchies.

The goal: Reduce inequities and give everyone the opportunity to live long and age well.
